Juan María
Solare
He was born on August 11th 1966 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where
he studied Piano with María Teresa Criscuolo and Perla Brúgola.
He studied Conducting with Mario
Benzecry, and Composition with Fermina Casanova, Valdo Sciammarella
and Juan Carlos Zorzi. In 1989
he graduated as Superior Professor of Piano and in 1993 as Superior
Professor of Composition, both at the National Conservatory of Music
in Buenos Aires. He also studied Music Analysis privately under
the guidance of Francisco Kröpfl.
Diploma in
Composition with Johannes Fritsch (Künstlerische Reifeprüfung)
at the Musikhochschule in Cologne. Postgraduate course with Mauricio
Kagel (1996). From October 1997 to Febraury 1999 he studied
with Helmut Lachenmann in Stuttgart. Between 1999 and 2001 studied
electronic music with Hans Ulrich Humpert in Cologne, with Diploma.

In 1990 his
string quartet Demeter was awarded First prize in the annual competition
for composers organized by Promociones Musicales de la Argentina.
In 1995 his Musical Theater piece Black Bart, for soprano sola,
was selected by Hans-Joachim Hespos (Germany) in an internacional
competition for one-minute-long compositions. In 1996 three Honourable
Mentions -for the works Epiclesis (flute), Vae Victis (saxo) and
Un Haiku bilingüe (choir)- in the competition "Juan Carlos
Paz", organized by the "Fondo Nacional de las Artes",
Argentina. In 1999 Honourable Mention for his piece "El Caballero
de la triste figura" (double bass) in the Composition Contest
of the British & International Bass Forum (BIBF), UK. In June
2000 his "Nenia in memoriam Juan Pedro Franze" was presented
in Amsterdam at the International Rostrum of Composers (UNESCO)
before producers from 35 broadcasting stations. November 2000 Third
Honorific Mention in the "First Composition Competition for
Guitar 'Agustín Barrios Mangoré'" organized by
the Associations YAGE and ASPEKTE SALZBURG. In May 2001 his piece
"Arriba los de abajo" (for Trio Basso) achieves the Third
Price in the composition contest of the "Viola-Stiftung Walter
Witte" (Viola Foundation Walter-Witte) in Frankfurt.
In July 1992,
1994 and 1998 he won scholarships from the Internationales Musikinstitut
Darmstadt to attend the Courses for New Music (Ferienkurse für
neue Musik). Lessons with Brian Ferneyhough and Bernhard Wambach.
In April 1994,
1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 he attended the
congresses "Music and Performance", "Music and Technic",
"Improvisation, Performance, Scene", "Music and Ritual"
and "New Music 1999: Balance and Perspectives", organized
by the Institut for New Music and Music Education in Darmstadt.
In April 2000 he gave there at the Congress "Sound and Perception"
a lecture on Luigi Nono. In 2001 he attended the Congress "Concert
- Sound Art - Computer" and in 2002 the Congress "Voice".
In 2003 he attended the Congress "Interculture" and organised
a concert with "Electroacoustic music from Iberoamerica".
In Juli 1994
he attended the course for "Algorithmic Real-time Composition"
by Clarence Barlow in Madrid, organized by the Centre for the Diffusion
of Contemporary Music (CDMC) and its Laboratory of Musical Informatic
and Electronic (LIEM).
Since 1986
until 1993 he taught Harmony, Counterpoint, Morphology, History
of Music, Acoustics and Chamber Music at the Conservatory of Tandil
(Argentina), and also gives private tuition in XXth Century techniques
(as at the SEAD, Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance). He occasionally
gives public lectures on these topics. Since January 2002 gives
piano tuition at the Musikschule Bremen. Since October 2002 he conducts
a chamber music group devoted to tango at the University Bremen.
In January
2002 he was jury (piano) in the 39th regional competition Jugend
Musiziert of the regions of Diepholz, Nienburg, Schaumburg (close
to Bremen).
He contributed
articles as a freelance writer to the music magazine Clásica,
and to the newspapers La Nación, El Sol, Nuevos Aires, Bitácora,
El Eco, Nueva Era and La Mañana (Argentina). Over 125 articles
published. Translations from German and English for col legno Records
(Munich) and for the International Bach Academy (Stuttgart). Regular
columnist and correspondent of the magazines "Ritmo",
"Doce Notas" (Madrid) and "Clásica" (Buenos
Aires). Writes on chess for "Jaque" (Madrid).
Between May
1990 and May 1992 he produced "Music of the Middle Age and
the Renaissance" on Radio Clasica. From December 1990 to August
1991 he conducted "Interdiscipline in Art", a music programme
for Radio Cultura (both in Buenos Aires). Since September 1994 he
is collaborator in the Spanish Short-Wave program of the German
radio Deutsche Welle (Cologne). Correspondent of Radio Contemporánea
(Gonnet, Arg.). Between January and June 1998 he produced (from
Cologne) the radio programm "Medio Siglo" (Half a Century)
on contemporary music for Radio Clásica.
Since October
1993 up to December 1994 he took up a scholarship awarded by the
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to undertake a postgraduate
course for one year in Composition and Analysis at the High School
of Music in Cologne with Professor Johannes Fritsch. There he also
studied Computer Music with Clarence Barlow, Contemporary Piano
Techniques with Klaus Runze and Instrumentation with Martin Herchenröder.
July 1998 -
June 1999 scholarship of the Heinrich Strobel Foundation (Baden-Baden).
June 2001 -
May 2002 he helds a scholarship at the Künstlerhäuser
in Worpswede, Germany.
Two of his works
had been published by the Verlag Dohr (Cologne). Another pieces
will be also published in the following weeks. Ediciones GCC (Grupo
de Canto Coral = Group for Choral singing) will publish in the following
months all his Choral works.
